Whether or not you consider yourself a professional writer, if you are the owner of a website, it is important that you possess basic copywriting skills. As your business gets more successful, you may have the opportunity to outsource copywriting and blogging to a third party.

  1. Shoot for an average sentence length that is roughly 15 words.

    Shorter sentences work well from time to time, but sentences that are longer than 15 words are difficult to read and will lose the attention of your reader right away. No need to drone on and on and on and on and on and on… Get the point?

  2. Alternate long and short sentences to give your writing a rhythm.

    Use punchy, short sentences to catch the attention of your reader, and alternate with longer sentences to drive your point home.

  3. Split up longer sentences into two sentences if it makes sense.

    Try to minimize the use of connecting words, like “because”, “and”, and “or”.

  4. Cut out unnecessary or repetitive wording in your blog copy.

  5. Make sure that every sentence and word that you write is compelling and has a purpose.

    Don’t get caught up in a long monologue that doesn’t make sense and will not entice your reader.

  6. Always, always, always write in short paragraphs.

    Long paragraphs are difficult to read online, and it is likely that your reader will leave your website if they see a full page of unbroken text!

  7. Use positive language to inspire the reader.

    Writing in negative terminology will naturally turn off a visitor to your website.

  8. Try to use bullets and subheadings whenever possible.

    This makes it easier for the ADD Internet reader to scan a page of content and pick out the important details.

  9. Always write in the language of your reader.

    If your business has a presence in social media, this is the perfect place to observe your readers in their natural habitat, so to speak. When you write in the language of your reader, they will be even more attracted to your business’s blog.

  10. Stimulate the reader with a question.

    Asking readers questions at the end of a blog post will give them a reason to comment. The more reader comments that you have, the more traffic that you will be able to direct to your blog to improve your brand reputation online!
